for well-being


When I tell people I design homes to help them feel better—not just live better—I often get a quiet pause. Then a moment of recognition.

Because most of us have felt the invisible impact of a space before:

The calm of a room filled with morning light.

The heaviness of cluttered corners.

The quiet joy of a space that simply works for how we live.


It’s not just imagination.

It’s design psychology.


We’re used to thinking of our homes as static backgrounds—pretty or functional, sometimes both. But in truth, they’re shaping us, every day. From how we wake up and wind down, to how we focus, connect, eat, rest, grow—your space is either supporting you… or slowly wearing you down.


That’s why at Atelier Lola Ferré, I don’t just design for style.

I design for well-being. For clarity. For energy. For calm. For growth.

Your Home Is Talking to Your Nervous System

(Whether you realise it or not)


We tend to see architecture and interiors as a visual field. But design is more than what meets the eye.


Your space is constantly in conversation with your body: How your home is laid out… how light enters the room… the surfaces you touch, the textures beneath your feet, beneath your hands, and throughout your space—the fabrics, surfaces, and materials you interact with, the sounds that surround you… all of it sends signals to your nervous system.


Research in environmental psychology shows that even subtle elements—natural light, spatial flow, scent, sound—can affect our mood, attention, and stress levels. Neuroscientists have found that organic textures and biophilic elements (like wood, stone, and greenery) reduce cortisol (the stress hormone), enhance cognitive performance, and boost feelings of vitality and calm.


These aren’t luxuries.

They’re essentials—especially today, when our homes are asked to do so much more—they are asked to be our offices, our sanctuaries, and our support systems in a fast-moving world. 


The Science Behind It

Dr. Sternberg’s research explores how elements like light, sound, airflow, and layout affect not just mood—but immunity, sleep, and recovery. Her work is part of a growing body of evidence that shows: well-designed spaces support physical and mental health.


In one of the most cited studies in design research, Dr. Roger Ulrich found that patients who simply had a view of trees from their hospital bed healed faster and needed less medication than those without.


Ulrich’s work pioneered the idea of evidence-based design—and though it began in hospitals, its relevance applies to our homes just as powerfully.


And as Dr. Sally Augustin, an environmental psychologist and founder of Design with Science, reminds us:


“When our spaces reflect our psychological needs, we experience a greater sense of calm, cognitive ease, and well-being.”


From circadian lighting to adaptive layouts, every design choice carries weight. Even the ability to control elements of your space—like lighting, temperature, or layout—has been linked to improved mood and reduced stress.


In other words: design isn’t neutral.

It either supports your well-being—or it slowly drains it.


Design Is Not Just a Visual Exercise. 

It’s about how you live and feel.


It’s emotional, psychological, and deeply practical.

It shapes your habits. Your energy. Your relationships.

And when approached with intention, it becomes a tool for real transformation.


That’s why I start every project by asking different questions:

  • How do you want to feel when you walk through your front door?

  • What do you need more of—rest, clarity, connection, inspiration?

  • Where is your home supporting you—and where is it holding you back?


Because when we align your space with your values, your goals, and even your nervous system, that’s when homes come alive.

That’s when your home starts to feel like a partner.

That’s when change begins to ripple outward.


Wellness Begins at Home. This Is the Foundation of My Practice


I didn’t arrive at this by theory alone.

When I redesigned my own home, I didn’t just see a change—I felt it. I didn’t just see a shift in how it looked—I felt a shift in how we lived. We slept better. We connected more easily. We moved through our days with more rhythm, more peace, more purpose.


It confirmed what I already knew as a designer, but hadn’t fully experienced until then:

Home isn’t just a container for life. It shapes life.
